Creative Quarter Prince Leopold

From the coal mine to the Creative Quarter

Art, culture, literature, gastronomy and trade on the area of the disused Fürst Leopold colliery in Dorsten.

The Fürst Leopold colliery in Dorsten's Hervest district was named after Nikolaus Leopold Fürst zu Salm-Salm, merchant and hereditary member of the Prussian manor house, who had the right of disposal over the mineral resources at the time the colliery was founded. From 1913 to 2001 coal was produced at Fürst Leopold colliery. The long period of operation and the constantly changing demands on the buildings and technical facilities are still reflected in the image of the mine today: Today the former colliery site is home to the "Fürst Leopold Creative Quarter", which houses a variety of gastronomic facilities in addition to a wealth of art and culture. The area with its buildings is used in such a way that the creative charm of the mining facilities is integrated as a backdrop and part of the current use, often without major structural changes. The CreativQuartier has become a scene quarter known beyond the borders and thus an ever-growing centre of attraction for the entire Ruhr region.
